The role of Instructional Paraprofessional is to provide support for the instructional program within the assigned classroom, with a focus on assisting special‑needs students in the resource classroom. Responsibilities include supervision, instruction, behavior monitoring, and clerical support.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support classroom objectives and IEP goals.
- Administer immediate first‑aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., medication, tube feeding, colostomy bags).
- Administer tests, homework, and make‑up work to support teachers in the classroom.
- Assist data collection under the supervising teacher to monitor student progress.
- Assist students with self‑care activities (e.g., toileting, washing, changing diapers, eating, dressing, grooming) to maintain students’ personal hygiene.
- Assist students individually or in groups with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, listening to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforcing English lessons, providing spelling practice, facilitating activities, computer learning programs).
- Attend job‑specific trainings and meetings (e.g., first aid, behavior management) to acquire or convey job‑related information.
- Communicate with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to evaluate progress and implement IEP or 504 objectives.
- Model appropriate social and interpersonal behavior to guide students in developing appropriate social skills.
- Implement behavioral plans identified in student IEPs under the supervising teacher to reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintain instructional materials, files, and classroom equipment to ensure availability and meet requirements.
- Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Perform clerical duties (e.g., screening phone calls, distributing materials, maintaining inventories, processing documents) to ensure efficient operations.
- Provide instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives and ensure student success.
- Report observations and incidents relating to specific students to appropriate instructional or administrative personnel.
- Supervise and escort students to and from classes to provide a safe learning environment.
- Age 16 or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must complete mandatory employee training within the first 3 months of employment.
