Start your commercial career in the highways industry
Are you a newly qualified Quantity Surveyor looking for the opportunity to start your career on major highways and civil engineering projects?
My client is looking for a Graduate Quantity Surveyor to join its commercial team in Leicester, supporting projects across National Highways Areas 7 and 9 throughout the Midlands.
You will have the opportunity to develop practical commercial experience while working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors, project teams and operational colleagues. You will gain exposure to live infrastructure projects and build your knowledge across cost management, NEC contracts, subcontractor management and project delivery.
This is an excellent opportunity if you have recently completed your degree and want to build a long-term career within the highways and infrastructure sector.
What you will be doing
As a Graduate Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial management of highway maintenance and civil engineering projects while receiving guidance and development from experienced members of the commercial team.
You will be:
· Supporting the preparation of monthly cost and value reconciliations.
· Helping monitor project costs, budgets and financial performance.
· Assisting with quotations, variations and compensation events.
· Supporting the preparation of applications for payment and final accounts.
· Helping manage subcontractor accounts, orders and applications for payment.
· Working alongside operational teams to understand project costs and commercial performance.
· Assisting with procurement and obtaining quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
· Helping identify commercial risks and changes in project scope.
· Developing your understanding of NEC contracts and contractual procedures.
· Maintaining accurate commercial and project records.
· Attending project meetings and site visits alongside experienced colleagues.
· Building relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and internal teams.
· Travelling to different project sites across the Midlands as required.
What you will need
To be considered for this Graduate Quantity Surveyor opportunity, you will ideally have:
· A degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or another relevant construction-related discipline.
· An interest in developing a career within highways, civil engineering or infrastructure.
· Good numerical and analytical skills.
· Good written and verbal communication skills.
· A willingness to learn and develop your commercial knowledge.
· Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
· Confidence using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
· The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a wider team.
· A willingness to travel between different project sites across Areas 7 and 9.
Previous highways or civil engineering experience would be beneficial but is not essential for a newly qualified candidate.
What you will receive
You will receive a salary of circa £30,000, dependent on experience, together with a company van and the opportunity to build your career within an established highways and infrastructure business.
You will gain hands-on experience across live projects rather than being limited to office-based commercial work. You will work alongside experienced professionals who can support the development of your technical and commercial knowledge as you progress.
The role will give you exposure to areas including NEC contracts, cost management, subcontractor accounts, forecasting, procurement and commercial risk, providing a strong foundation for progression within Quantity Surveying.
The position is based around Leicester, with projects located across Areas 7 and 9 in the Midlands. You will therefore need to be comfortable travelling to different sites as part of your working week.
