Build safer, better streets across Leicester
Are you an experienced Street mason or a Street mason Improver looking for your next opportunity? Join a well-established public sector organisation responsible for maintaining and improving local highways and infrastructure across the city.
This is an excellent opportunity to put your practical construction skills to work, contributing to essential highway maintenance and public realm improvement projects that make a real difference to local communities.
We're looking for reliable, safety-conscious individuals with experience in street works, paving or highway construction who take pride in delivering high-quality workmanship.
The Role
You'll work as part of a highways team, carrying out street masonry and highway construction activities to the required standards of safety, quality and efficiency.
Key responsibilities include:
Laying paving products, including slabs, kerbs, concrete blocks and natural stone.
Interpreting drawings, specifications and work instructions to achieve accurate lines, levels and finishes.
Carrying out highway construction and maintenance tasks, including work around gullies, drains, chambers, ironwork and other highway features.
Handling, laying and compacting construction materials.
Undertaking banksman duties, assisting with excavators and vehicles, and following safe digging procedures.
Maintaining safe working areas for colleagues, pedestrians and road users.
Identifying site hazards and following health, safety and environmental procedures.
Completing relevant paperwork, work records and measurements.
Working collaboratively with colleagues to meet deadlines and maintain high standards of workmanship.
Depending on your level of experience, you may also help plan daily activities, organise materials and plant, and support or mentor less experienced team members.
About You
To be considered, you'll need:
Experience working in construction, highways or a relevant street masonry role.
The ability to lay paving products to a defined standard.
Knowledge of construction materials, specifications, compaction and workmanship requirements appropriate to your level.
The ability to interpret instructions and technical drawings.
Good numeracy skills, including taking measurements and calculating quantities.
Knowledge of construction health and safety requirements and safe working practices.
Experience undertaking banksman duties, including supporting safe excavation work.
Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
A flexible, practical approach and a commitment to delivering quality work safely.
Qualifications and training
You must hold, or be committed to obtaining within six months of starting, the following:
New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) accreditation / Streetworks ticket.
CSCS Health and Safety Certificate or Card.
Additional plant operator qualifications, a full UK driving licence, LGV driving capability and relevant health and safety training are advantageous.
Working Requirements
This is a hands-on outdoor role, so you'll need to be comfortable working in varied site conditions and adverse weather.
You must also be willing to:
Participate in an out-of-hours standby rota, typically one week every four to five weeks.
Work additional hours, including weekends, when service requirements demand it.
Travel independently to work locations across the city.
Wear the required uniform and personal protective equipment.
Support wider operational activities when needed, including roadworks, drainage, logistics and traffic management.
Assist with emergency response activities, such as flooding and snow clearance.
Why Apply?
You'll have the opportunity to contribute to essential public infrastructure, work alongside an experienced highways team and continue developing your technical skills through training and professional development.
Whether you're an experienced Street mason or an Improver ready to build on your existing experience, this role offers the chance to make a tangible contribution to the local environment and the communities that use it every day.
