Consultant General Anaesthetist

Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Consultant General Anaesthetist at the James Paget University Hospital. This modern district general hospital has approximately 500 beds and is situated in a coastal holiday area of East Anglia, serving a population of 250,000 that grows considerably in the summer.

The hospital operates 10 theatres, including a Day Care Unit with 3 theatres, a delivery suite with an adjacent maternity theatre, and an intensive care unit with 12 ITU/HDU beds. A new Elective Orthopaedic Hub is under construction, housing 2 operating theatres, 4 recovery bays, and 8 day‑care pods. The Consultant will provide a flexible anaesthetic service across a wide range of surgical specialties and may develop a subspecialty interest (e.g., regional anaesthesia, peri‑operative medicine, pain medicine).

• Share general anaesthetic workload with consultant colleagues, including participation in on‑call duties and maternity cover.
• Provide a flexible anaesthetic service to diverse surgical specialties.
• Co‑ordinate mutual out‑of‑hours cover and cover for annual, study, and professional leave.
• Offer consultation and advisory support to medical colleagues across the Trust.
• Liaise with staff in other specialties and attend regular clinical meetings.
• Participate in the Royal College of Anaesthetists continuous medical education programme, including study leave.
• Play an active role in teaching, quality improvement, research promotion, and clinical governance.
• Contribute to the development of the anaesthetic services.

The James Paget University Hospital is a research‑active trust and a partner university hospital for medical students from the University of East Anglia. It is located in Gorleston, 200 m from the beach, with easy access to Norfolk Broads, coastline, and nearby towns such as Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The trust is developing a new hospital site as part of the National New Hospital Programme.

• Provide a flexible anaesthetic service across a range of surgical specialties, with opportunities for a focused practice area and daytime obstetric sessions.
• Support continuous professional development through study leave and funding.
• Actively participate in clinical governance, quality improvement programmes, and educational supervision.
• Demonstrate leadership qualities to develop services.

• FRCA or equivalent
• MBBS or basic medical degree
• On the UK (GMC) Specialist Register or within 6 months of completing UK Anaesthetic training, or eligible at date of interview
• Full GMC registration

• Postgraduate degree in education

• Clinical training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Anaesthesia
• Ability to provide consultant cover to emergency and obstetric anaesthesia, including on‑call
• Knowledge of the latest RCoA training curriculum and training/teaching skills for anaesthetic trainees
• Interest in pre‑assessment/peri‑operative anaesthesia and NHS practice
• Experience of obstetric anaesthesia

• Experience as a Consultant in the UK
• Interest in ultrasound‑guided vascular access and nerve blocks

• Understanding of research principles
• Knowledge of evidence‑based medicine to support decision making
