The University Hospitals of Leicester are inviting applications for a Clinical Fellow in General Surgery. There will be opportunities to gain clinical experience from consultant‑led ward rounds, clinics and theatre sessions. Exposure to emergency experience in the form of acute surgical assessment and emergency CEPOD theatres will be available. Oncall shifts at the EMPCC necessitate management of post‑operative patients at the highest standard of care. Efficient team working and effective communication with senior surgeons and EMPCC nursing staff will be essential.
Participation in the junior doctor teaching programme is expected and opportunity to partake in quality improvement projects will be available e.g. The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit. Participate in the running of department/ward. Provide surgical clinical supervision of Junior doctors on the wards. Participate in the general surgical oncall triage rota at registrar level (There may be an opportunity to work on the 1^st on‑call rota, dependent on experience).
Provide senior medical input for non surgical wards when oncall (especially Out of Hours). Assist with achieving the DOH Clinical Quality Indicators. The ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team is essential to this post. You will participate in operational and research projects and the teaching of the Senior House Officers, Medical Students, Nursing staff and other Ancillary staff.
Supervise, monitor and assist Junior Medical Doctors in the day‑to‑day management of in‑patients in posts. Attend and participate in ward rounds as timetabled. Take part in timetabled Emergency work. This will involve contributing senior input to the on‑call team and may include any combination of leading the arrest team, running the surgical admissions unit and triage area as the surgical registrar on call, reviewing medical patients on base wards and providing a medical opinion for patients in other specialities.
Participate in Surgical Outpatient Clinics. Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.
