The Anaesthetic Department at Pilgrim Hospital provides anaesthetic services for all the surgical specialties based at Pilgrim Hospital, plus services to the Accident and Emergency department and the Department of Radiology (including CT and MRI scanning) There is a 12 beddedICU/HDU staffed by the Anaesthetic department. Theatre facilities include 11 operating theatres; a block of four for gynaecological surgery, general/colorectal surgery, vascular surgery and urology, and a block of six for trauma & elective orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology, breast surgery, ENT and dental surgery, plus one operating theatre in the maternity block.

The Anaesthetic Department staffing include 15 Generalist Consultants, 6 Intensive Care Consultants, 1 Specialist Grade and 16 Specialty Doctor posts in total. There arealso some training posts that rotate with Leicester., 1. Rotating between ICU and Anaesthesia (covering emergencies & obstetrics) over an 8 week rolling on-call rota. The competency expected of this role will equivalent to ST4+ level within the UK with the candidate being able to work under indirect supervision with the non-resident Consultant on-call for advice.

2. Critical Care component
- You will be expected to screen patients for admission to Critical Care from ED, Medical Wards, Surgical Wards and postoperatively and communicate effectively with the Consultant in charge. You will be required to organise stabilisation, transfer to the critical care unit =/- radiological unit and establish all lines required by the patient for level 2/3 care. 3. The Obstetric component
- You will be expected to manage intrapartum and intraoperative anaesthesia and analgesia for an elective and emergency obstetric patient population and support their post operative analgesia and stabilisation in critical incidents whilst senior, non-resident support is sought where required.
3. There will be regular commitments to surgical operating lists with consultant supervision in accordance with Royal College of Anaesthetists recommendations for training. SAS colleagues will be encouraged to work independently which is supported by a Trust approved process.

  • MB BS or equivalent
  • PLAB or PLAB exemption
  • GMC registered
  • ALS/ATLS provider
  • At least 4 years' postgraduate training. At least 1 year of which is in anaesthesia & Intensive Care at ST4+ equivalent level or evidence of completion of Stage 1 training. (equivalent to RCOA UK IAC and IAOC)
  • Postgraduate qualification in anaesthesia, Currently accredited Life Support instructor of ALS/ATLS.
  • Final FRCA, Minimum of 3 years of experience in clinical anaesthesia, including independent obstetric practice and intensive care, More than 3 years of experience in anaesthesia and intensive care, Fundamentals of basic science applicable to clinical anaesthesia.
  • Fundamentals on clinical anaesthesia practice including equipment and resuscitation.
  • Pre-operative assessment, intraoperative management and postoperative care of surgical patients
  • Good note keeping ability
  • Basic computer literacy
  • Ability to evidence/demonstrate key values and behaviours in line with the Trust framework, Good communication skills
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to recognise limitations of knowledge and experience and request appropriate support, Postgraduate certificate or degree in education
