Job Description & How to Apply Below

Prospero Teaching is looking for a compassionate, patient, and relationship-focused SEN Tutor to support a Year 9 learner who is currently out of mainstream education. This young person has a history of SEMH needs, with recent EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance), and requires a tutor who can help them gently re-engage with education through a mentoring‑led approach.

About the Role

This is not a traditional academic tutoring role. Building a trusting, positive relationship with the student is the first and most important priority. Academic learning (initially English and Maths) will be introduced only once rapport, confidence, and emotional safety have been established.

Location

Initial sessions will take place in the student's home. As confidence grows, sessions may gradually transition into a school or community setting.

Hours

Flexible – we will build a timetable that works for both you and the young person (8 hours a week).

Pay

£25‑30 per hour.

Start

ASAP.

What We're Looking For

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • At least 6 months of experience in a UK education setting (school, tutoring, or alternative provision)
  • Experience teaching KS3 English and Maths
  • Experience working with SEN and SEMH learners (desirable)
  • A nurturing, calm, and trauma‑informed approach
  • The ability to build strong, positive relationships with young people who may have had negative educational experiences
  • Reliability, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping young people re‑engage in learning

If you’re looking for additional hours, we can build your timetable with multiple students to create a fuller, consistent schedule.

About Prospero Teaching

Prospero Teaching works closely with Local Authorities across the UK to provide high-quality alternative provision for young people unable to access mainstream education.

We pride ourselves on helping students rediscover the joy of learning, rebuild confidence, and move forward positively in their educational journey and we want you to be part of that impact.
