Permanent No rail experience? No problem. We are recruiting a System Technician to join a leading rolling stock maintenance company in Leicester, providing high-level technical support across the maintenance, fault diagnosis and performance of a modern rolling-stock fleet. Previous rail or rolling-stock experience is not essential. Full training on the fleet, systems and maintenance requirements will be provided. We are particularly interested in hearing from experienced electrical, mechanical or multi-skilled technicians from other complex engineering and maintenance environments, including:
Military / Armed Forces engineering Automotive Aerospace Rail and rolling stock Heavy engineering Manufacturing and automated production Plant and heavy equipment Bus, coach or commercial vehicle maintenance Marine engineering Power generation and utilities Other safety-critical maintenance environments If you have strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills and are comfortable working with complex electrical, electronic and mechanical systems, your experience could be highly transferable.
The Role This is more than a routine preventative maintenance position. As a System Technician, you'll operate as a technical problem-solver, investigating complex faults, identifying root causes and helping ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the fleet. You'll develop knowledge across a wide range of train systems, including high and low voltage systems, TCMS, propulsion, safety systems and associated electrical, electronic, mechanical and software systems.
Full training will be provided to develop your knowledge of the trains and their associated systems, making this an excellent opportunity for experienced technicians looking to transfer their skills into the rail industry.
Key Responsibilities Carry out complex fault finding, diagnosis and repair across rolling-stock systems. Investigate in-service defects, repeat failures and technical incidents to identify root causes and appropriate corrective actions. Perform functional testing across mechanical, electrical, electronic and software-based systems. Interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics to support fault diagnosis and repair. Monitor train and system performance, identifying trends and opportunities to improve reliability.
Provide technical support to depot maintenance and production teams. Support investigations into reliability, availability and safety-related incidents. Produce clear technical reports covering defects, investigations, repairs and recommendations. Support post-incident testing, technical investigations and modifications. Investigate recurring failures and contribute to improvements in fleet performance. Develop specialist knowledge of designated train systems. Provide technical support, coaching and mentoring to colleagues. Support the implementation of engineering changes and modifications.
Carry out secondary checks of safety-critical work where required. Identify technical and operational risks and recommend appropriate mitigation. Contribute to continuous improvement focused on safety, reliability, availability and maintenance performance. Shift Pattern As part of a highly skilled team of system technicians you will work a rotating shift pattern from Monday to Friday comprising of early and late shift:
Early: 07:00 - 14:42 Late: 14:00 - 21:42 The shifts rotate weekly. In addition, you would currently be expected to join a 24-hour call-out rota for one week in every eight, although this is expected to move to one week in every ten. The shift pattern is still under development and may change in the future. However, there are currently no plans to introduce a regular night shift into the rota.
About You We're looking for someone with a strong technical maintenance background. You do not necessarily need previous rail experience. You'll ideally have: A recognised electrical, electronic, mechanical or multi-skilled engineering apprenticeship, supported by City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent technical qualifications/experience. Hands-on experience within a maintenance, service, engineering or fault-finding environment. Strong practical experience with fault finding, diagnostics and problem solving.
Experience working with complex electrical, electronic and/or mechanical systems. The ability to read and interpret electrical or mechanical drawings and schematics.…
