The Position

Laboratory Analytical Technician

Job Summary

  • Hours:

    37.5 hours per week
  • Salary:
    Up to £26,668 per annum (plus applicable shift pay, standby and overtime where required)
  • Join our Analytical Services Group and play a key role in delivering accurate, high‑quality analytical data to support our operations and customers.
Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory‑scale test measurements using approved test methods and Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Operate and maintain analytical instruments including ICP‑OES, Carbon/Sulphur, Nitrogen and Mercury analysers, XRF, XRD and microscopy equipment, as required.
  • Accurately record, check and report results within agreed timescales using LIMS and other systems.
  • Carry out routine instrument checks, calibration and quality control activities in line with ISO/IEC 17025 and internal quality standards.
  • Identify and report non‑conformities, equipment issues and deviations in sample integrity, taking appropriate corrective action in consultation with the Laboratory Manager or Supervisor.
  • Support experimental programmes and laboratory investigations as directed, ensuring results are reliable and clearly documented.
  • Work safely at all times, adhering to Health & Safety procedures, COSHH assessments and safe systems of work, including when handling hazardous chemicals and operating at elevated temperatures or pressures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement activities and maintain a clean, organised laboratory environment.

Qualifications
  • Be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a science‑based subject.
  • Have at least one year’s experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrate practical experience of analytical techniques such as ICP‑OES, ICP‑MS, XRF, XRD or similar.
  • Be familiar with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Show strong attention to detail and the ability to deliver accurate results to strict deadlines.
  • Be safety‑conscious, with experience handling hazardous chemicals and working in controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and internal customers.
  • Be proactive, inquisitive and able to solve problems methodically.
