About the role

We are seeking two motivated and enthusiastic Research Interns to join an exciting Ministry of Defence-funded project exploring contemporary challenges in nuclear deterrence and international security. The roles will support the work of the UK Nuclear Deterrence Network, a consortium involving King's College London, RUSI and the University of Leicester

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on research experience, work alongside leading academics and contribute to policy-relevant research in an area of significant national and international importance

Working under the guidance of Professor Andrew Futter and Dr Alice Spilman, you will support research activities through literature reviews, data collection, policy analysis and the organisation of network events, workshops and seminars. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to research outputs and undertake an independent piece of research on a topic related to the project.

This opportunity is only open to current third-year undergraduate students or current Master's (MA/MSc) students studying at a university within the Midlands region. Applicants should be studying a relevant subject such as International Relations, Politics, Security Studies or a related discipline.

About you

To be the ideal candidate, you will be curious and a motivated student with a genuine interest in international relations, security studies, defence policy or related areas. You enjoy exploring complex issues, analysing information and communicating your findings clearly and effectively.

We are looking for someone who is eager to develop their research skills in a supportive academic environment and who is excited by the opportunity to contribute to policy-relevant research with real-world impact. Whether through your studies, coursework or wider interests, you will have demonstrated strong analytical thinking, excellent written communication and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

You will be comfortable managing your own workload, balancing priorities and working towards deadlines while contributing positively to a wider project team. Above all, you will be enthusiastic about learning, keen to engage with new ideas, and interested in helping to explore some of the most important contemporary challenges in international security
