Role Overview

Our Crown Court Clerks are essential to ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly. They speak confidently in court, communicate with the judge and participants, and produce accurate and timely court documents. Our training programme provides a structured yet flexible approach to building the skills required to perform this vital role.

Working Patterns and Location

Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week. The Civil Service welcomes part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns where they meet the demands of the role and business needs. Applications for part‑time working will be considered, with a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Hybrid working arrangements are available where business need allows. This is a non‑contractual form of flexible working that blends office, MoJ sites and home. All employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office.

For the nationally advertised role, all successful candidates will be appointed to the nearest viable office to their home postcode and will receive the appropriate pay scale.

This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas under current immigration rules. If you have held a Skilled Worker visa prior to 22 July 2025, please raise this during your vetting checks. Otherwise, you will need to consider your options for obtaining and/or maintaining your right to work in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

This unique position at the heart of justice requires high emotional resilience and a non‑judgemental approach to service users. You will:

  • Speak publicly in court with confidence and liaise with judges, defence, prosecution, media and members of the public.
  • Ensure the smooth running of all Crown Courts sitting daily, intervening in court when required and maximising judicial sitting time.
  • Produce exact, time‑critical documentation, conduct arraignments, record hearing outcomes accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain emotional resilience and the ability to multi‑task while working within established processes.
  • Adapt to new systems and technologies as the civil service continues to invest in digital solutions.
Qualifications & Competencies
  • Self‑assurance to speak in court and communicate confidently with judges and all participants.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Accuracy and timeliness in completing documents to deadlines.
  • IT proficiency with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and software packages.
  • Experience in producing accurate, time‑critical court documentation.
  • High emotional resilience and sensitivity to difficult issues.
