Family Officer

This six-month fixed-term post sits in the council's family help service, where three officers are being recruited to take in referrals about child protection, safeguarding and early help. The work involves judging children's needs and risks and deciding which support fits, using a strengths-based approach that builds on each family's own networks. Hybrid working alongside multi-disciplinary colleagues sets the role apart.

Applicants need at least two years in children's social care, early help or customer services, and knowledge of child-focused law and guidance.

• Receive and triage referrals from professionals, families and the public on child protection and safeguarding
• Assess the needs of children and families and decide on support options
• Assess risks and develop safety plans to reduce them
• Build on the strengths of families and their support networks
• Work alongside multi-disciplinary teams to provide timely support
• Keep detailed records tracking children and families through services

• Good general education, ideally NVQ level 3 or equivalent

• At least 2 years in children's social care, early help or customer services

• Knowledge of legislation and guidance affecting children and families
• Strong analytical skills to assess risk and make informed decisions
• Professional curiosity about family situations
• Excellent communication with children, families and professionals
