Position: PhD / Researcher (38 hours per week)

The Centre would especially welcome PhD proposals that relate to the following line of research in the field of public international law:
Accountability, sanctions or international legal approaches towards economic crime. If this line of research is of interest to you and you are strongly motivated to conduct PhD research, please submit your application, which should include a CV setting out relevant experience, a letter of motivation, a PhD research proposal (max. 500 words, aims and objectives, method/approach), and a writing sample (e.g. LLM thesis, or published article/book chapter).

What

you will do
  • Engage in supervised scientific research that will ultimately result in a doctoral thesis;
  • Carry out a systematic review of scholarly and policy material related to the PhD topic;
  • Present your work at international conferences;
  • Participate in the educational, research related and administrative activities of the Grotius Centre, including the Bachelor courses in international law.

What you bring
  • Excellent command of English;
  • An LL.M. in public international law from an internationally recognised research‑intensive university. Previous research or working experience is an asset;
  • Demonstrated research skills, as evidenced by a Master thesis and/or relevant publications in scientific journals;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills;
  • Strong dedication and commitment to the goals and objectives of the Centre, including a willingness to assist with undergraduate and LLM teaching;
  • A high sense of initiative, and the ability and willingness to work collaboratively and collegially in a team.

We also offer:

  • An employment contract for a fixed‑term period of 4 years. Continuation after the first year is dependent on a positive evaluation. This contract falls under the CLA of Dutch Universities;
  • A salary in accordance with the Collective Agreement of Dutch Universities for academic personnel, starting with € 3,059 gross per month in the first year and gradually rising to € 3,881 in the final year, based on a full‑time appointment (38 hours).   • A holiday allowance (8 %), an end‑of‑year bonus (8.3 %), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
  • Full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs for home‑to‑work travel;
  • Flexible working hours: a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full‑time working week of 38 hours;
  • Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription and bicycle scheme;
  • The University will provide you with a laptop.
