The City of Lenexa is currently accepting applications for a Community Standards Officer I or II to join our Community Development team. This position works 40-hours per week and plays a vital role in maintaining community standards, protecting public health and safety, and ensuring a high quality of life for Lenexa residents and property owners. The ideal candidate will:
- Have prior experience in enforcement or compliance and with Lenexa geography
- Have general residential construction knowledge
- Be able to clearly explain City requirements and address disputes with tact
- Be comfortable working with local law enforcement and in courtroom settings
- Enjoy spending time both in the field inspecting and also in an office setting
Under the supervision of the Community Standards Supervisor, the Community Standards Officer enforces City codes including, but not limited to property maintenance, rental licensing and massage establishments. Work is performed primarily in residential neighborhoods, including apartment complexes and commercial areas as necessary and in response to complaints with latitude to be proactive to ensure equal compliance as appropriate.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities- Conducts daily field inspections to investigate complaints and performs proactive inspections. Contacting residents and business owners is essential.
- Tracks all inspection details, photos, conversations, etc. related to inspections through provided software.
- Completes exterior rental inspections of single-family and multi-family properties.
- Handles incoming phone calls, emails and service request concerns related to community standards.
- Works basic code cases through prosecution in partnership with the Legal Department when necessary.
- Issues abatement work orders when necessary and completes all required follow-up inspections.
- Performs massage establishment inspections in accordance with City code.
- Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.
- In addition to the above, a Community Standards Officer II also works cross-divisional enforcement cases which may include building, zoning and fire code violations. Working knowledge of City codes and applicable uses. May train Community Standards Officer I.
This position requires the ability to walk/climb over difficult and uneven terrain to make inspections; the ability to lift objects weighing up to approximately 10 lbs. from the floor to the waist; the ability to ascend and descend stairs; and visual acuity to inspect projects. This position performs work outside in extreme temperatures and potentially hazardous environments such as abandoned buildings or new construction
Qualifications and Compensation Community Standards Officer I:$25.13 - $29.14 per hour, dependent upon the following qualifications:
Minimum:
High school diploma or G.E.D.;
Must have two years of prior experience in code enforcement or a closely related public contact position; or equivalent experience, education or training. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Desired:
Experience in a municipal court setting.
$27.29 - $31.64 per hour, dependent upon the following qualifications:
Minimum:
High school diploma or G.E.D.;
Must have four years of prior experience in code enforcement or a closely related public contact and enforcement position. Must have some experience in a municipal court setting. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Desired:
Associate degree in environmental science, public relations, human services, law enforcement or related field.
