Summary:

Under the direction of the VP/Director of Mortgage Production, the Mortgage Underwriter will play a vital role in the loan process, assisting other members of the production department and Home Loan Specialists with the origination of first and second mortgage loans and ensuring the highest degree of efficiency, regulatory compliance, and ultimately Life Design, throughout the process.

This position requires strong compliance acumen; excellent organizational skills; the ability to communicate with multiple parties, internally and externally, clearly, and effectively; and possess knowledge and experience in residential lending.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides the highest level of customer service in a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic manner to employees, customers/clients, and the community.
  • Availability to originating, processing, and closing staff as needed for questions and inquiries.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of all Bank and Correspondent loan products, services, policies, and procedures, and helps to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews new applications for accuracy, qualifications, and compliance to regulatory, program and Bank requirements.
  • Evaluate mortgage and equity applications by analyzing borrower’s creditworthiness and making lending decisions up to established loan authority.
  • Is responsible for the integrity and validation of all application and underwriting data verifying loan file is in accordance with secondary market feedback certificates and internal portfolio guidelines.
  • Enters/updates data into Encompass and generates required documentation.
  • Reviews and approves Property Appraisal for compliance with secondary market guidelines.
  • Provides timely decisioning regarding pending mortgage and equity applications and is responsible for meeting the Bank’s service timelines for all loans originated. Works closely with mortgage production coordinator and originator, and other related parties. Updates parties regarding loan status and requests necessary information and documents. Provides department support and develops a working relationship with production and origination staff.
  • Staying up to date with secondary market automated underwriting guidelines and correspondent process requirements.
  • Cross-trained in the areas of loan set-up, processing, underwriting, and closing to offset workload during times of increased volume and vacation/PTO coverage.
  • Responsible for verifying compliance and staying up to date with all state and federal compliance regulations including but not limited to RESPA, TILA, ECOA, Fair Lending, Dodd-Frank, and TRID.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Recent experience in mortgage processing/underwriting or equivalent experience in mortgage processing/underwriting/closing.
  • Working knowledge of secondary market guidelines and FHA/VA processes preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently and interact well with other members of the lending team.
  • The candidate must have good analytical and technical skills with a positive attitude and a commitment to delivering outstanding service.
  • Must have cyber security awareness to protect the digital environment, the Bank, and customers.
