OverviewUnder the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs a variety of patient care activities to assist members of the healthcare team in caring for patients. Responsibilities involve communication with nursing staff, direct patient care, and maintaining a safe environment.
Responsibilities- Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes in patients, such as skin condition, vital signs, and mental status.
- Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment; utilizes interventions to de-escalate patients and, if necessary, participates in restraints in accordance with training.
- Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, nourishment, and toileting.
- Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.
- Performs patient safety checks, utilizes fall prevention devices, and follows Restraint Policy standards when caring for a restrained patient.
- Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximetry) and measures patients’ weight and height.
- Performs EKGs, point-of-care tests, bladder scans, and collects, labels, and prepares specimens for laboratory transport.
- Assists RN/Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures, including positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning equipment.
- Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake; refills tube-feeding bags; empties and records outputs as directed.
- Performs ostomy care on established patients, as directed.
- Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.
- Requests assistance from identified resources when needed and keeps current with unit changes by reading communication boards and e‑mails.
- Minimum of a high school education or GED.
- Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
- Basic computer skills.
- Basic medical terminology knowledge.
- Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.
- Minimum of a high school education or GED.
- Current Basic Life Support certification.
- Demonstrated competency at the Patient Care Technician I level, work a minimum of 800 hours and at least 6 months as a PCT I, or 6 months of prior inpatient/outpatient direct patient care experience.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.
- Medical terminology knowledge.
- Computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to gather information, build relationships, and provide exceptional service to patients.
- Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations.
- Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.
- Work indoors in a patient care environment.
- Requires hand dexterity, hearing, vision, and ability to take direction from patients or providers, adjust equipment, observe, and describe patient observations.
- Ability to lift, up to 50 pounds.
- Work is of heavy demand, standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
