Substitute teachers, para educators, and secretaries are hired to teach students and/or support the program in the absence of a teacher/para educator/secretary on a daily or long‑term basis.

- Understand and maintain confidentiality.
- Communicate orally and in writing.
- Use technology effectively to complete tasks.
- Report to work daily and on time.
- Understand and follow written and oral directions.
- Possess effective organizational skills.
- Possess effective written and oral communication skills.
- Possess knowledge of the programs, policies, and procedures of St. Mary's County Public Schools.
- Assume all duties and responsibilities of the regular teacher in a given classroom; long‑term substitutes may attend staff meetings, parent conferences, etc.
- Assume all duties of a regular secretary to support the program administratively.
- Maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, handling public relations problems courteously and tactfully.
- Carry out written plans left by the regular teacher for the day's lessons and record pupil assignments and classroom work according to school and teacher evaluation policies.
- Record pupil absences according to school procedures.
- Assume responsibility for supervision of students in the building, on the grounds, or on field trips.
- Become familiar with and follow school and division procedures for routines and emergencies.
- Leave a clear, written summary for the teacher of the work covered and other relevant comments.
- Perform duties as requested by the teacher or school administrator during planning periods.
- Maintain confidentiality in classroom, school site, administrative buildings, and in the community.
- Utilize the Smart Find Express absence management system.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Submit fingerprints and successfully pass a criminal history background check.
- Complete authorization for Employee History Verification forms.
- Complete the substitute training course.
- Observe in a school classroom for at least half a day between the class date and intake meeting.
- Complete the Vector Training (formerly Safe Schools) videos (directions will be given in class).
- Complete at least 10 substitute jobs per school year.
Temporary hourly assignment.
SalaryBase pay range: $15.10 – $23.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications. Pay increases with additional education:
- High School Diploma/GED: $15.10 – $16.10
- Associate in Arts (AA): $17.00 – $18.00
- Bachelor of Arts (BA): $20.00 – $21.00
- Master’s degree or higher: $22.00 – $23.00
