Overview

The Public Safety Dispatch Assistant Supervisor will assist the Shift Supervisor with the day-to-day processing activities of those employees assigned to a team; fills in for the Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor as required; receives emergency 911 calls and dispatches appropriate agencies; is certified as proficient in Law Enforcement and/or Fire/Rescue dispatching; demonstrates leadership for assigned employees and provides training, coaching and mentoring.

Full salary range for this position is $62,525 - $107,578.

Responsibilities
  • Must be proficient in performing Law Enforcement and/or Fire/EMS dispatch positions independently.
  • Maintain certification in Emergency Telecommunicator Course (ETC), Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD), Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD), Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Communications Training Officer (CTO), Maryland Electronic Telecommunication Enforcement Resource System (METERS), National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Assumes responsibility for the operation of the center on shift in the absence of the Shift Supervisor.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership and maintains a professional environment throughout the division.
  • Assist the Shift Supervisor in defining team roles and responsibilities, ensuring progress towards set goals and acknowledges team accomplishments.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, high stress emergency work environment.
  • In an emergency or other necessity, must have a working knowledge with the transfer of dispatch operations to the back-up facility.
  • Ability to train and document the performance of staff in a professional environment.
  • Makes critical decisions in response to transmissions from responders.
  • Operates all equipment in the communications room.
  • Assists with identifying and reports any equipment failures to the proper agency.
  • Communicate effectively with the Shift Supervisor on all operational issues on assigned shift.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Thorough knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures.
  • Answer phones in a calm manner, distinguish between telephone lines, and evaluate and prioritize emergency calls.
  • Effectively represent St. Mary’s County Government to the public.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to keep accurate and thorough records.
  • Dispatch emergency agencies as appropriate.
  • Ability to operate relevant computer and radio systems.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of attentiveness, alertness, and responsiveness on duty.
  • Ability to maintain self control in tense situations and work effectively under stress.
  • Ability to receive and input messages into MILES system and distribute as appropriate.
  • Ability to file messages by classification type, code number or alphabetically.
  • Ability to input codes, demographics, DMV, and other law enforcement information.
  • Thorough knowledge of geography of St. Mary’s County Road systems, waterways, police districts, and fire/EMS response areas and all surrounding counties.
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency services’ roles (groups, teams, agencies) utilized in emergency response.
  • Ability to fill Public Safety Dispatch I and II schedule in an emergency vacancy situation.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all data from internal and external sources.
  • Ability to take direction from the Shift Supervisor/Communications Manager and respond accordingly.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years’ experience as a Public Safety Dispatch II or equivalent.
  • Last two performance evaluations must be at least satisfactory.
  • All mandatory certifications are current for Law Enforcement and Fire/EMS.
  • Must complete the Supervisory Communications Training Course within one year of the effective promotion date.
  • Must complete the Communications Training Officer Course within one year of the effective promotion date.
  • Must have completed law enforcement communications certification training and Fire EMS Dispatch certification training and be released from training within 6 months of promotion.
