General Summary of PositionFunctions as a member of the patient-centered care team to provide direct patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse for assigned patients and their families/significant others. Assists medical and nursing staff with procedures and/or tests and with patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Performs specific care activities such as specimen collection, phlebotomy, intravenous (IV) catheter insertion, electrocardiography (EKG), and documentation in the health record.
Incumbents may perform all or a combination of the duties described depending upon the assigned work area and the specific needs of the patients and the department.
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality and safety standards and SPIRIT Values; complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene (bathing, mouth care, dressing, skin care, positioning, feeding, ambulation, toileting, range of motion), and with mobility and transportation using crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, and stretchers.
- Collects specimens (blood, urine, sputum, stool), performs venipuncture/phlebotomy, obtains EKGs, applies external telemetry monitoring, and inserts or changes intravenous (IV) catheters and dressings.
- Measures and documents patient intake and output (I&O), vital signs, height, weight, pulse oximetry, point‑of‑care testing, and other data in the health record.
- Performs routine sterile and non‑sterile treatments and activities (thermal soaks, tube feedings, ostomy care, Foley catheter care, perineal care, dressing changes, wound care, turning, positioning, post‑mortem care, drainage tubes, oxygen equipment, traction casts, splints).
- Maintains the comfort, privacy, confidentiality, and dignity of each patient; performs 1:1 observation and restraint application; assists providers and registered nurses in examinations and procedures.
- Rounds on all assigned patients according to established standards (hourly rounding), reports changes in patient condition to the RN and care team, ensures complete hand‑offs, and assists in CPR when indicated.
- Participates in patient/family teaching and responds to questions promptly and courteously.
- Maintains cleanliness and safety of patient rooms, manages linen, trash, and supplies, and supports environmental services.
- Assists with patient transportation during discharges, transfers, and appointments; completes errands such as specimen delivery.
- Receives and stocks equipment and supplies, maintaining orderly supply rooms.
- Attends staff meetings, educational offerings, and multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent required.
- Completion of an approved nursing assistant certification program required.
- Less than 1 year experience as a certified nursing assistant or patient care tech required.
- Experience as a care technician; general healthcare experience in acute or long‑term care preferred; student nurse in junior or senior year preferred.
- CNA – Certified Nursing Assistant from the relevant jurisdiction required.
- CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (BLS/NRP) from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department.
- CPT – Phlebotomy Technician Certification preferred.
- Basic math knowledge.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
Hiring range: USD $19.55 – $34.25 /hr.
