• Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
• Patrol hospital property and respond to calls for assistance.
• Report on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact safety.
• Mentor and train security staff; assume charge role as needed.
• Conduct patrols via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
• Monitor security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
• Participate in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
• Prepare and submit reports and logs of incidents, investigations, and activities.
• Utilize nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques.
• Provide assistance for way‑finding, parking, deliveries, and other information requests.
• Respond to security and medical code calls.
• Investigate incidents and accidents; gather evidence and notify authorities.
• Testify at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
• Work cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
• Conduct foot patrols of buildings and grounds; monitor access and inspect packages.
• Collect and secure patient valuables and lost‑and‑found items.
• Monitor camera surveillance and other security technology systems.
• Respond to law‑enforcement requirements and interact with visitors.
• Ensure quality outcomes for the department by communicating with staff and the public.

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate’s degree preferred.
• 1–2 years related security or law‑enforcement experience required, or 1–2 years of Med Star service in lieu of security experience.
• Valid State Driver’s License in good standing required.
• MD Special Police Commission preferred; DC Special Police Officer preferred.
• Must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC.
• IAHSS certification as a Security Officer preferred.
• CPR (BLS and NRP) certification from AHA or American Red Cross required within 90 days.
• Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
• Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation, and crisis prevention intervention.
