The Network Engineer will provide on-site Hands & Feet support during a scheduled firewall migration at customer locations in Orkney and Lerwick. The engineer will work closely with the remote implementation team to ensure the successful installation and migration of the new firewall infrastructure with minimal disruption to business operations.
Key Responsibilities1. Pre-Implementation Activities
- Arrive at the customer site before the scheduled maintenance window.
- Coordinate with the remote network engineering team prior to commencing work.
- Verify that all required hardware, cables, rack space, power connections, and accessories are available.
- Perform a visual inspection of the equipment and installation environment.
- Ensure compliance with customer site access and safety procedures.
- Unbox and inspect the firewall appliance for any physical damage.
- Mount the firewall securely into the designated rack location.
- Install rails, brackets, and mounting hardware where required.
- Connect redundant power supplies to the appropriate power sources.
- Label equipment and cables as instructed by the project team.
- Connect network interfaces according to the implementation plan.
- Patch Ethernet/Fibre cables between the firewall and existing network infrastructure.
- Verify cable connections and port assignments.
- Ensure proper cable management and maintain a clean installation.
- Remain on-site throughout the migration window.
- Execute physical tasks requested by the remote network engineers, including:
- Connecting and disconnecting cables
- Moving cables between ports
- Power cycling equipment
- Checking LED status indicators
- Assist with hardware troubleshooting during the migration process.
- Confirm equipment power status and hardware health.
- Verify physical connectivity after migration.
- Report any alarms, hardware faults, or unexpected behavior immediately to the remote team.
- Take clear photographs of:
- Front and rear cabling
- Serial numbers (if requested)
- Record installation details and any issues encountered.
- Provide updates to the project coordinator throughout the implementation.
- Ensure the installation area is clean and organized.
- Remove packaging materials if permitted by the customer.
- Obtain customer acknowledgement of completed on-site work, if required.
- Remain available until the remote implementation team confirms successful completion of the migration.
- Experience installing network equipment in data center or enterprise environments.
- Hands‑on experience with rack mounting, structured cabling, and network hardware.
- Basic understanding of firewalls, switches, routers, and network connectivity.
- Ability to follow detailed implementation instructions from remote engineers.
- Familiarity with console connections and basic hardware troubleshooting.
- Strong communication skills and ability to provide real‑time updates.
- Professional customer‑facing attitude and adherence to site safety procedures.
