Job SummaryOur current Respiratory Practice Nurse is retiring in May 2026. We are seeking a motivated Respiratory Practice Nurse to lead and deliver high‑quality respiratory care. The role requires independent clinical decision‑making, with support from friendly GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team when required. The successful candidate will be adaptable, proactive, and committed to delivering safe, evidence‑based care. Work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of the patients, ensuring that practice policies and procedures are followed.
We are willing to offer training and development for the right candidate to upskill themselves, so they can perform the clinical responsibilities expected of a Respiratory Practice Nurse.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive respiratory reviews for patients with asthma and COPD, including structured annual reviews in line with QOF and national respiratory guidelines. Deliver both in‑person and telephone reviews, depending on clinical appropriateness and the patients ACT score.
- Assess, diagnose (where appropriate), and manage both acute and chronic respiratory conditions, including exacerbations, within scope of practice. Provide inhaler technique assessment and optimisation.
- Develop and implement personalised care plans.
- Perform and interpret spirometry & FeNO testing.
- Offer and provide smoking cessation advice, whilst signposting to appropriate NHS services.
- Support maintaining high QOF and ECF achievement for respiratory indicators in particular asthma and COPD.
- Support vaccination programmes (e.g., influenza, COVID‑19 & pneumococcal).
- Support wider nursing team with on‑the‑day admin such as urinalysis and fridge temperature monitoring.
Support the wider nursing team with simple wound care in accordance with a nursing plan, and undertake ECGs particularly in periods with high levels of leave within the team.
Prescribe independently, in line with practice formulary.

Person SpecificationThe post holder must be:
- Qualified and Registered Nurse with the NMC, with relevant asthma and COPD training and experience.
- Aware of the professional boundaries they are working to and highlight any areas of required development.
- Able to communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues in both spoken and written form. Able to relay clinical information clearly and collaborate with all members of the MDT, applying themselves as a team‑player.
- Able to maintain accurate, contemporaneous electronic records.
- Able to adhere to all practice and NHS policies, including:
Data Protection and Confidentiality, Infection prevention and control, Safeguarding, Health & Safety, and uniform policy. - Able to demonstrate basic IT proficiency for clinical systems, data entry and the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and email.
- Comfortable with following the practices processes/procedures[SF(NRS1].
- Personable, polite and patient. Able to empathise with all patients, including those who are anxious or have additional needs.
- Able to adapt and manage difficult or challenging patient interactions, remaining calm.
- Must be able to assess their own competency.
- Use appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in own designated clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards, reporting any potential risks.
- Understand and apply the principles of the cold chain.
- Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, maintaining accurate documentation, consent, sharps and needle stick injuries.
