Job Brief

The Galt Museum & Archives invites qualified individuals to join our team as casual Museum Attendants. This position is visitor‑focused and spans three main areas of responsibility: interpreting, guiding, and facilitating public engagement services such as tours, programs, and special events; maintaining public engagement spaces; and handling administrative services ranging from gift shop duties to admissions, event ticketing, memberships, and opening & closing duties.

Attendant duties will extend to both the Museum and Fort Whoop‑Up locations. The position may be funded, in part, through a grant.

Schedule & Working Hours

  • 37.5 hours per week from May 25 – September 5
  • Weekends only, from September 11‑30

The role is casual, non‑permanent, approximately 16 weeks, with up to 5 positions available.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to self‑identifying First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students currently enrolled in a post‑secondary program.

Specific Duties
  • Interpreting and guiding tours through permanent and temporary exhibitions and interpretive spaces, when applicable (in interpretive attire, where required)
  • Responding to public inquiries; answering phones; providing exhibition and collections information
  • Assisting facility rental clients to ensure events run smoothly, including set‑up and dismantling of event areas
  • Fort Whoop‑Up animal coordination, gardening, and light cooking (per established regulations)
  • Assisting programmers with community and school engagement programs, as required
  • Selling merchandise, counting inventory, and cash balancing
  • Performing daily/weekly janitorial duties for the Fort (Interpretive Centre/Barracks)
  • Performing hourly/daily COVID cleaning
  • Attending staff meetings/training as required
Skills And Qualifications

You are a people‑person. You must possess excellent customer relationship skills, supplemented by post‑secondary education and experience in human history and/or museum visitor services, tourism, public relations, or communication arts. Knowledge of regional history will be an asset. Retail and sales experience, plus knowledge of POS systems, is also desirable. You must be able to move chairs and tables, and have the ability to work with a variety of audio/visual equipment, when needed.

A current First Aid and CPR certificate is required, as well as a valid Class 5 Operator’s License. Fluency with Blackfoot and other languages, will also be an asset. Candidates must have attended post‑secondary school in the January‑April 2021 semester and be planning to return in the fall of 2021.

WAGE: $26.50 per hour

HOURS: 0 to 37.5 hours per week, including evenings & weekends
