Faculty of Education - Instructor II (Social Contexts in Education)

The Faculty of Education is seeking a dynamic educator and innovative educational leader whose academic work demonstrates in-depth knowledge and understanding of the relationship between theoretical knowledge and professional practice to provide high quality preparation of future teachers. The successful candidate will be an experienced educator and collaborative colleague for a two-year term, full-time Instructor II position in the area of Social Contexts in Education.

Academic duties include teaching undergraduate courses (including supervision of undergraduate field experiences and assessment of student work), engaging in professional activities that contribute to a larger discourse, and other contributions to the University and scholarly communities. The Faculty has a deep commitment to educating students in the multifaceted considerations of social contexts in education, and every undergraduate student is required to complete a social contexts course in addition to other Educational Foundations courses.

Open to applicants who demonstrate the ability to teach in online, face-to-face, and blended formats, with a willingness to integrate innovative technology into teaching. Relocation to Lethbridge, Alberta to support students and engage in university life is expected. Fluency in English is required; proficiency in a second language is an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate courses in Social Contexts in Education, including supervision of undergraduate field experiences and assessment of student work.
  • Engage in professional activities that contribute to a larger discourse within the Faculty and the scholarly community.
  • Contribute to the mission of the Faculty of Education, including teaching in formats (online, face-to-face, blended) and integrating technology to enhance learning.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills

Qualifications include a graduate degree directly relevant to the social contexts of education as core components of our undergraduate Bachelor of Education programs. A doctoral degree is preferred. Applicants who are nearing completion of their doctoral degree will be considered; individuals with a master’s level graduate degree in a field relevant to Social Contexts in Education may also be considered, provided they have a minimum of three years of teaching experience and are eligible for teacher certification in Alberta.

The successful candidate should have the ability and interest to teach courses in and contribute to our Bachelor of Education degree.

Ability to teach in online, face-to-face, and blended formats, and the ability to integrate innovative technology into teaching will be an asset. Prospective applicants are expected to relocate to Lethbridge to support students and actively engage in university culture. Fluency in English is required; proficiency in a second language is an asset.

Preference will be given to applicants with scholarly expertise, experience, and/or ability to teach in areas directly related to the social contexts of education, including but not limited to the following areas:

  • Teaching and learning in complex classroom spaces.
  • Social and cultural influences and issues affecting learning, teaching in school environments.
  • Approaches to addressing accessibility, belonging, community and decoloniality.
  • Social construction of knowledge.
  • Student success in inclusive learning environments.
  • Privilege and its influences on educational experiences.
  • Legal frameworks supporting the creation of equitable classrooms.
  • Diverse cultural knowledges.
  • Blackfoot and other Indigenous knowledges
  • Inclusive learning environments and complex contexts.
  • Learning, identity, wellbeing and the social good.

Ability to teach in one or more of these additional areas at the undergraduate or graduate level is considered a strong asset:

  • Gender and sexuality
  • Early years and elementary pedagogies
  • Sociology of education
  • Philosophy of education
  • Professions and trades education (e.g. CTS, CTF)
