Job Title

Educational Assistant

Position Overview

Supports students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 with varying needs, including behavioural challenges, complex physical disabilities, developmental delays, and severe medical conditions. The role involves ensuring student safety, adapting academic activities, implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans, and collaborating with teachers, support staff, and the school community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist and adapt academic tasks to meet individual student needs.
  • Implement and monitor strategies to support socially appropriate behaviours.
  • Attend to students’ physical and medical needs specific to each individual.
  • Monitor student progress and contribute to data collection.
  • Execute individualized programs and Positive Behaviour Support Plans developed by each student’s Learning Team.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to share information and reflect on strategy effectiveness.
  • Ensure all students’ safety at all times and maintain a supportive learning environment.
  • Participate in community activities such as swimming, skating, and other enrichment activities as needed.
What You Need to Succeed
  • Training and/or experience working with students who have severe behaviour challenges.
  • Understanding of neurodiversity, including ASD, ODD, FASD, ADHD, and other behavioural disabilities.
  • Experience implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans.
  • Experience supporting students with Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or Speech‑Language acquisition needs (asset).
  • Willingness to provide personal care, lifting, and toileting support for students.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to solve problems and create opportunities for student success.
  • Understanding of trauma‑informed practice, resilience building, self‑regulation strategies, and conflict resolution.
  • Readiness to engage in ongoing professional learning and collaborative work.
  • Basic knowledge of early literacy and speech‑language acquisition processes (asset).
    • Training in sign language, Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC), or Hanen programs is an asset.
Education Requirements
  • Proof of Grade 12 or Canadian Adult Educational Credential (CAEC) issued by an accredited Canadian province.
  • Canadian post‑secondary certificate or diploma in a related field such as Educational Assistant, Early Childhood Education, or Child & Youth Care.
  • If education was obtained outside Canada, provide Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) or International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) confirming completion of high school or post‑secondary equivalencies.
Conditions of Employment
  • A police information check, including Vulnerable Sector Check, with no charges or convictions.
  • A satisfactory Intervention Record Check from South Region Alberta Child and Family Services.
  • Proof of valid photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, provincial , passport, or Nexus card).
  • Documentation of a valid Social Insurance Number in the employee’s legal name.

Hours and Locations

28.00 – 29.50 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

  • Gilbert Paterson Middle School – 2 positions (29.50 hrs/week)
  • Fleetwood‑Bawden Elementary School – 1 posting (28.00 hrs/week) – Early Entrance Program
  • TBD – 15 positions (28.00 – 29.50 hrs/week)
