Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to shape the safety and sustainability of Alberta’s highways? Join our team as a Field Support Technologist (FST) and apply your technical and problem-solving skills to help ensure the safety, reliability, and long-term preservation of vital transportation infrastructure. In this impactful role, you’ll help maintain safe travel conditions for thousands of road users every day - from commuters to commercial carriers.

As a Field Support Technologist, you’ll serve as a crucial link between the technical systems, maintenance contractors, and field inspections that sustain Alberta’s provincial highway network. You’ll oversee the integrity of the Highway Maintenance Contract, contribute to data collection and infrastructure planning, and champion public safety in both routine and emergency conditions. Your attention to detail, collaborative mindset, and ability to adapt in the field will ensure the highway system continues to serve Albertans efficiently and safely - today and into the future.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Collecting and managing asset data
Gathering accurate field data using GPS and software systems (e.g., Transportation Infrastructure Management System (TIMS), Appurtenance Inventory Application (AIA), Ver-Mac Jamlogic) to support inventory tracking, planning, and budget forecasting. Safely deploying message boards and sensors to collect traffic and speed data, while maintaining safety for field teams and the public.
  • Auditing and overseeing contract delivery
Monitoring and auditing work performed by contractors and consultants to ensure compliance with technical standards, safety requirements, and contract terms. Preparing inspections, technical reports, and documentation to support contract administration and quality assurance.
  • Inspecting and supporting safe highway operations
Conducting regular road and bridge inspections to identify hazards, monitor maintenance activities, and recommend corrective actions. Reviewing work zone traffic accommodations and addressing public concerns related to safety and service quality.
  • Supporting planning, innovation, and public programs
Assisting with project estimates, service agreements, and maintenance strategies to inform long-term planning and policy development. Leading delivery of community-facing programs such as the annual Highway Clean-up and Adopt-a-Highway initiatives, including coordination, communication, and reporting.
  • This position requires regular travel throughout Alberta—typically between 25-50% of the work schedule. It offers a varied work environment that includes both field and office-based activities, ideal for individuals who enjoy a flexible and hands-on approach to their work.
