The Environmental Protection Officer delivers a range of regulatory inspection, investigation and compliance services across the province. The role applies the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, and the Climate Change and Emissions Management Act, and works under the Compliance Assurance Lead, providing technical support to colleagues and outside agencies.
Responsibilities- Apply the Government of Alberta’s compliance assurance framework to achieve legislative compliance.
- Conduct proactive and reactive inspections to assess regulatory compliance in sectors such as contaminated sites and industrial facilities.
- Respond to environmental incidents and public complaints; collect evidence; report findings.
- Perform investigations and gather evidence of contraventions following the Integrated Compliance Process.
- Co‑coach junior staff and act as a technical resource.

- A two‑year technical diploma in Environmental Science, Agriculture Studies, or related field OR a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Minimum four years of direct compliance, regulatory, and/or enforcement experience (or two years for a bachelor’s degree).
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Equivalency consideration: one year of directly related experience for each year of completed education, and vice‑versa.
- Experience in regulatory inspection and/or investigation processes.
- Experience in contaminated sites and industrial facilities.
- Prior application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and Water Act.
- Knowledge of soil conservation, reclamation, vegetation management, waste management, and pesticide application methods.
- Ability to collect environmental samples and interpret analytical results.
- Judgment in interpreting legislation during investigations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Work schedule:
Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week. - Some travel required; must possess a valid driver’s licence.
- Candidate responsible for costs of required documents and interview travel.
