Effective February 2, 2026, Health Care Aides (HCAs) in Alberta will become regulated health professionals under the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). All HCAs, regardless of work setting, will be required to be registered with the CLHA at the time of application to Covenant Health.

The Health Care Aide (HCA) is a regulated health professional who provides direct personal care and health support services to clients across the lifespan, in accordance with their scope of practice, regulatory standards, and government legislation. Functional supervision is provided by a member of the nursing team and may occur directly or indirectly in accordance with client needs, care context, and regulatory standards.
Working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team the HCA provides care in alignment with documented care plans and assigned or delegated tasks, delivering assistance with activities of daily living, monitoring and reporting changes in health status, and supporting the physical, emotional, psychosocial and behavioural well being of clients.
HCAs attend to clients
¿ comfort, engagement, and safety by recognizing changes in behaviour, responsiveness, participation, or signs of distress, and by promptly sharing observations with the appropriate team member. They play a vital role in promoting comfort, dignity, and continuity of care, and demonstrate flexibility in responding to the needs of clients and the care team. HCAs actively engage in continuous improvement through feedback, self-reflection, and learning opportunities.

Must be registered with and hold a valid practice permit from College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) prior to commencing employment.
AdditionalRequired Qualifications:
Minimum of 6 months of experience in a long-term care or similar healthcare setting. Basic understanding of long-term care principles, including support for chronic conditions and daily living activities. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with residents and their families. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a collaborative approach to working with a healthcare team.
