Your Opportunity

The Outpatient Department is seeking a motivated and experienced Assistant Head Nurse to undertake a key leadership role within the service. This position offers an exciting opportunity to combine advanced clinical practice with leadership development, while contributing to the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care in a dynamic and diverse outpatient setting. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping outpatient nursing practice, supporting staff development, and driving continuous improvement across the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical leadership and operational oversight to nursing staff within the Outpatient Department.
  • Act as a clinical resource, promoting evidence-based and clinically effective nursing practice.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support staff, including shift coordination and workload allocation.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives through ongoing review and development of clinical practice.
  • Support unit goals, departmental priorities, and service development initiatives.
  • Facilitate and manage change through strong clinical judgement, analysis, and decision-making skills.
  • Practice at an advanced clinical level, including assessing referrals for PICC suitability.
  • Perform comprehensive vascular assessments.
  • Insert PICCs using strict aseptic technique.
  • Utilize ECG-based tip confirmation for bedside PICC placement.
  • Demonstrate advanced expertise in IV catheter insertion, maintenance, and IV therapy administration.
  • Monitor patients for infusion-related reactions and respond promptly to emergent clinical situations.
Description

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers.

You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications
  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of acute care nursing experience, including experience in an ambulatory, outpatient, or surgical setting.
  • Minimum 2 years of charge nurse or equivalent leadership experience.
  • Expert knowledge of infusion standards and protocols.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, sound judgment, and ability to practice autonomously.
  • Strong ability to mentor, coach, and support staff development, including feedback and skills reinforcement.
  • Advanced clinical decision-making skills and ability to support staff during high-acuity or emergency situations.
  • Proven ability to provide clinical care in a fast-paced environment across a variety of Ambulatory and IV clinic settings.
  • Experience demonstrating advanced sterile technique including previous work in an Operating Room, Minor OR or performing PICC insertions.
  • IV Management and Initiation Certification; CVAD Certification; CVAD Occlusion Management Certification;
    Anaphylaxis Management Certification;
    Transfusion of Blood Components and Products Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Vascular access expertise including advanced knowledge in central line care and aseptic technique.
  • Exceptional clinical and diagnostic reasoning.
  • Effective communication skills with patients, families, the public, medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience in patient teaching and education.
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills.
  • Experience in phlebotomy, POCT-urine pregnancy and glucose meter.
  • CVAA certification.
