We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Student Lab Technician to join our team in the Wildlife Analytics Lab (WAL). The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing, processing, and analyzing cementum samples from various species (primarily ungulates). The Student Lab Technician will perform a variety of tasks, including sample extraction, preparation, mounting, and staining, as well as data collection, analysis, and assisting with reporting.
This is a part-time position (up to 7 hours/week). The Student Lab Technician will have the opportunity to work with a highly motivated and dedicated team of researchers, contribute to cutting-edge research in cementum analysis, and gain valuable laboratory experience that will propel them into a successful career in the field of environmental science.
- Receive, inspect, and log samples of wildlife teeth.
- Perform cementum preparation, mounting, and staining procedures.
- Operate laboratory equipment including microtomes, embedding units, tissue processors, microscopes, and microscope cameras.
- Perform data collection and analysis using specialized software and databases.
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols.
- Maintain detailed records of experiments and data analysis.
- Contribute to preparation of reports and presentations on research findings.
- Collaborate with other team members and researchers.
- Contribute to social media management and content creation.
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift 25 lbs
- Manual dexterity to manipulate laboratory equipment and samples
- Comfort working in a laboratory environment with standard chemical and biological hazards (training provided)
- Working towards a diploma or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or related field.
- Previous experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.
- Familiarity with cementum aging techniques.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures.
- Ability to follow SOPs and safety protocols.
- Exceptional time management skills needed to balance concurrent studies with lab work.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and specialized software for data analysis.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, as needed.
