Long Term Substitute Prep Teacher – Bucks County Intermediate Unit
To allow preparatory time to teachers by traveling to itinerant locations on a daily basis and coordinating and/or providing academic and social instruction to support the educational programming and physical needs of special education students assigned to Intermediate Unit Programs.
Essential Functions- Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to achievement levels of students.
- In consultation with Special Education teacher, may confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and others to assist in the development of individual educational programs for students at different learning ability levels, including educable, trainable, and severely impaired.
- Instructs students in academic subjects, utilizing various teaching techniques, such as phonetics, multisensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning.
- Instructs students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and economic self‑sufficiency such as hygiene, safety, and food preparation.
- Observes, evaluates, and prepares reports on progress of students.
- In consultation with Special Education Teacher, may be expected to meet with parents to provide support and guidance in using community resources.
- Administers and interprets results of ability and achievement tests.
- Provide basic instruction to students in accord with district and IU policy, including but not limited to the following:
- Instruction in basic academic skills, including reading, mathematics, written expression, social studies, etc.
- Instruction in activities of daily living, i.e. toileting, grooming, personal hygiene.
- Instruction in social skills, i.e. reciprocal social interactions, turn‑taking, friendship building, etc.
- Instruction in behavior skills, i.e. increasing on‑task performance, decreasing incidents of physical aggression.
- Increased communication skills, i.e. conversational engagement and topic maintenance.

Supervisory ResponsibilityMay supervise 1 to 4 Paraeducators.

Physical DemandsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for long periods, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
This is a full‑time, 193‑day calendar position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hours are dependent on the needs of the districts. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Education and ExperienceLevel of Degree:
Bachelor’s Degree from a four‑year college or university.
Skills and Abilities
- PA Department of Education certificate as a Special Education Teacher and appropriate content area.
- Current first aid and CPR certification, updated regularly.
Citizenship or work authorization to work in the United States required.
