As a Network Coordination Assistant, you'll play a key support role in helping manage and coordinate activities on East Sussex’s public highway network. Working closely with the Network Coordination Manager, Network Compliance Manager, and Traffic Manager, you'll contribute to delivering effective network management duties, ensuring compliance with key legislation including the Traffic Management Act 2004 (TMA) and the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA), while minimising disruption for residents and road users.
YourMain Responsibilities Will Include
- Processing a high volume of applications to carry out works on the public highway, including permits, lane rental applications, Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs/TTRNs), and other licences—assessing them for compliance, coordinating responses, and issuing or refusing permissions as appropriate (escalating complex cases to the Network Coordinator where needed).
- Supporting the coordination of major works, projects, and activities that could have a significant impact on the East Sussex road network, helping to balance operational needs with traffic flow and public safety.
- Assisting in monitoring and resolving network management issues by working collaboratively with the Network Coordination Manager and Compliance Manager to identify problems, discuss solutions, and implement improvements that enhance service delivery.
- Keeping up to date with any changes to the East Sussex Permit Scheme, Lane Rental Scheme, related legislation, guidance notes, or best practices—ensuring these are understood and consistently applied when handling applications.
- Attending performance meetings with works promoters (utility companies, contractors, etc.) as required, contributing to discussions, raising common issues, and communicating decisions clearly.
- Helping to coach and train team members within the Network Coordination team, supporting their development under the guidance of the Network Coordination Manager.
- Undertaking any other network management tasks or duties as reasonably requested by the Network Coordination Manager, Network Compliance Manager, or Traffic Manager to support the team’s overall objectives.
You’ll Have / Be
- Clear oral and written communication in plain English (e.g., handling queries, liaising with stakeholders, writing letters/emails)
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Good numeracy, literacy, and computer/keyboard skills (including web‑based systems and apps)
- Initiative to understand tasks, prioritise work, and meet tight deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills, customer focus, tact, diplomacy, and empathy (especially with road space/public issues)
- Problem‑solving ability
- Team player who is self‑motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible
- Good time management
