Senior Risk Manager - Major Infrastructure Projects
Salary: £63,000 - £65,000
Location:
Falmer, East Sussex (Hybrid)
Working Arrangements:
Hybrid working with flexibility - typically attending the office in Falmer, East Sussex a few times per month, plus site visits as required.
Are you an experienced Project Risk professional looking to work on some of the UK's most complex and high-value infrastructure programmes? Our client is delivering major projects ranging from £200 million to £2.5 billion, and we are looking for a skilled Senior Risk Manager to embed best‑practice risk management across their growing Major Projects portfolio.
We're looking for someone who understands project and operational delivery risk within major infrastructure, rail, construction, oil & gas, nuclear or similar engineering-driven environment, can interpret scopes, challenge assumptions, quantify threats & opportunities and influence multidisciplinary teams.
About the Role
As Senior Risk Manager, you will be responsible for implementing the risk management framework across major infrastructure programmes, ensuring risks are proactively identified, assessed, managed and communicated across the project lifecycle.
Your work will span qualitative and quantitative analysis, stakeholder facilitation, integration of third‑party risk data, and driving effective mitigation strategies. You'll collaborate closely with planning, cost, change and external delivery partners to provide an integrated view of project risk exposure.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management
Implement and manage risk management strategies and governance in line with corporate processes.
Facilitate identification and assessment of threats, opportunities and issues across engineering, commercial, environmental and stakeholder domains.
Assess operational delivery risks, including cost, schedule, H&S and reputational impacts.
Establish and maintain risk registers using risk management software (Riskonnect).
Work with risk owners to define realistic, actionable mitigations with clear deadlines.
Track and drive progress of mitigation actions, escalating where required.
Evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation and update residual risk exposure.
Advise Project Managers on contingency use and drawdown.
External Partners
Review contractor and supply-chain risk registers and challenge the maturity of their mitigation plans.
Integrate external partner updates into the master project risk register.
Assess variances in month‑on‑month risk performance.
Ensure consistent risk reporting across third-party delivery teams.
Assurance & Governance
Conduct qualitative risk assessments ensuring each risk has defined causes, impacts and ownership.
Carry out Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis (QSRA) and Quantitative Cost Risk Analysis (QCRA).
Maintain P50 and P80 confidence levels for major project milestones.
Track emerging issues and opportunities.
Stakeholder Management
Collaborate with Planning, Cost, Change, Engineering and Construction teams to ensure alignment.
Feed risk insights into schedule scenarios and critical path analysis.
Communicate trends, risk exposure and recommendations to senior leaders.
Essential Experience & Skills
Demonstrable experience in project risk management within major infrastructure, rail, construction, oil & gas, nuclear or similar engineering-driven environments.
Strong working knowledge of project delivery and the risks associated with engineering scope, construction, interfaces, logistics and delivery activities.
Experience delivering QSRA and QCRA (non-negotiable).
Ability to quantify threats and opportunities and assess cost, schedule, H&S and reputational impacts.
Outstanding communication and stakeholder facilitation skills - able to extract insights from technical experts and influence decision-making.
Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret technical and commercial information.
Essential Qualifications
One of the following is required:
APM Risk Certificate
PMI-RMP
IRM Certificate / Practitioner Level Technical Knowledge
Experience using risk management software is desirable
Strong Excel skills.
Familiarity with NEC contracts (clauses 31, 32, early warnings, compensation events).
Comfort working with regulatory reporting requirements.
