The Vacancy

Are you an experienced Registered Nurse with a passion for palliative and end of life care? Are you looking for an opportunity to lead and inspire a dedicated team while making a meaningful difference in the lives of patients with life-limiting illnesses and those important to them.

We’re looking for a compassionate and confident Team Leader to join our dedicated Inpatient Unit team at St Peter & St James Hospice. In this vital and rewarding role, you’ll provide visible clinical and managerial leadership, supporting the delivery of high-quality, individualised palliative care. Working closely with the IPU Ward Manager and multidisciplinary colleagues, you’ll help ensure patients and families receive exceptional care, support and dignity throughout their hospice journey.

Location: St Peter & St James Hospice, North Common Rd, North Chailey, BN8 4ED

Working Hours: 34.5 hours per week

Shifts: Flexible rota across Monday to Sunday, including weekends and bank holidays

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide clinical and managerial leadership to Registered Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and volunteers within the Inpatient Unit
  • Coordinate admissions, referrals, discharges and Continuing Healthcare-funded patients, ensuring excellent patient flow and accurate data management
  • Lead clinical shifts and regularly undertake the role of Nurse in Charge, ensuring safe staffing and effective workforce deployment
  • Deliver and oversee holistic, person-centred palliative care that addresses patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs
  • Support patients and families through complex conversations, advance care planning and end of life decision-making
  • Supervise, mentor and develop nursing staff through one-to-one support, performance reviews and clinical education
  • Lead clinical audits, risk assessments, incident investigations and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and safety
  • Contribute to the development of clinical policies, procedures and standard operating procedures, ensuring evidence-based practice
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and hospice services to deliver outstanding patient and family support
  • Promote a positive, inclusive and compassionate culture that reflects the values of St Peter & St James Hospice

What We’re Looking For:

  • Registered Nurse with active NMC registration
  • Educated to degree level (Level
    6) or equivalent
  • Experience of assessing, planning and delivering patient care within a clinical setting
  • Strong leadership, delegation and team management skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to support patients, families and colleagues in sensitive and emotionally demanding situations
  • Experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred palliative and end of life care
  • Ability to prioritise workload, manage resources effectively and make sound clinical decisions
  • Commitment to continuing professional development and evidence-based practice
  • Ability to promote diversity, inclusion and compassionate care in line with hospice values
  • Own transport is essential due to our rural location
