Role Overview
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) provides specialized care for neonates in a Level 1 nursery, collaborating with pediatric hospitalists and the department of pediatrics. Responsibilities include assessments, diagnostics, resuscitation, transitional care, patient and family education, and risk assessments. The NNP manages common neonatal issues such as respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, sepsis, and hyperbilirubinemia, including care for late preterm infants and those with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome.
They participate in high-risk deliveries, cesarean sections, and respond to emergency neonatal needs in the emergency department, including IV placement and lab work. The role requires independent functioning, leadership, and the ability to direct a small team in a non-traditional setting, with 24/7 coverage on shifts. Communication with tertiary care centers and preparation for neonatal transport are vital components.

Must hold a master's degree in nursing from an accredited Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program, with current NCC certification, BLS, and NRP certifications. A minimum of 5 years' experience in hospital or acute care settings is preferred; new graduates are not considered. Essential skills include excellent communication, electronic health record proficiency, crisis management, confidentiality, and customer service. Credentials required are NP, BLS, ACLS, and NRP.
