OverviewA Neurosurgery Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) provides specialized care to patients with neurological and neurosurgical conditions in both the acute and ambulatory setting. Working closely with neurosurgeons and interdisciplinary teams, this role plays a critical role in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
ResponsibilitiesPatient Assessment & Diagnosis:
- Conduct comprehensive neurological assessments.
- Order and interpret diagnostic imaging and lab tests.
- Formulate differential diagnoses and treatment plans.
Pre- and Post-Operative Care:
- Prepare patients for neurosurgical procedures.
- Monitor and manage post-operative recovery.
- Address complications and adjust care plans as needed.
Clinical Procedures & Support:
- Assist in surgical procedures when necessary.
- Perform bedside procedures such as lumbar punctures or wound care.
Medication Management:
- Prescribe and manage medications, including pain control and seizure prophylaxis.
Patient & Family
Education:
- Educate patients and families on diagnoses, surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and rehabilitation.
Collaboration & Coordination:
- Work with neurosurgeons, neurologists, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate care across inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Call coverage may be required.
- Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
- Previous experience in neurosurgery preferred.
- Licensure as an advanced practice clinician (PA or NP) in the state of Delaware or ability to obtain with offer letter.
- Active Delaware controlled substance license and DEA or ability to obtain with offer letter.
- Current BLS certification per American Heart Association guidelines.
- Excellent critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills.
Essentials:
Clear communication skills, knowledge of basic computer programs, ability to maintain patient and team confidentiality, ability to manage crisis situations, and strong customer service skills.
- Master of Science in Nursing
- Master of Physician Assistant Studies
Completion of a masters, post-masters, or doctorate degree in a nurse practitioner program accredited by the CCNE or ACEN, current certification by the ANCC, AANP, or ARCPA-approved program with NCCPA certification and current licensure to practice as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant in Delaware, and current ACLS certification.
