Laboratory Supervisor - Automotive Coatings
Location:
Lewisburg, TN | Salary: $70,000 - $80,000
We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Engineer with experience in chroming and painting processes for the automotive industry. This role focuses on surface treatment quality, process consistency, and compliance with industry standards. The candidate will analyze coating performance, troubleshoot process deviations, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities- Conduct laboratory testing and analysis of e-coating, chroming, and painting processes on automotive components.
- Perform chemical and physical testing (e.g., thickness, adhesion, corrosion resistance, gloss, color match).
- Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration and operational accuracy.
- Evaluate raw materials, bath compositions, and coating properties in accordance with OEM requirements and industry standards.
- Collaborate with production and quality teams to resolve paintline or coating-related issues.
- Support process audits, FMEA activities, and control plans for coating operations.
- Document test results, maintain laboratory records, and prepare detailed technical reports.
- Assist in validating new materials, technologies, and process improvements.
- Ensure environmental, health, and safety compliance within the laboratory and production areas.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of laboratory or quality experience in the automotive coatings industry.
- In-depth knowledge of e-coating, electroplating (chroming), and painting technologies.
- Familiarity with OEM coating specifications and quality standards (e.g., GM, Ford, Toyota).
- Proficient in using analytical equipment such as titration units, spectrophotometers, crosshatch testers, and salt spray chambers.
- Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Experience with automotive paint systems (waterborne, solvent-based, powder coating).
- Knowledge of ISO/TS 16949 or IATF 16949 requirements.
- Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certification is a plus.
