Sixth Form Academic Mentor

Support Staff Scale, Band 5, £28,793 to £30,730 (FTE £34,029 - £36,318)

Hours Per Week: 35 hours (term time + inset + 1 week), 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Availability required for August results day, GCSE results day, and 6th Form enrolment.

Accountable to:
Assistant Principal

We are looking for a candidate who will put the sixth‑form community at the centre of their focus and manage the Sixth Form Study Area, creating a culture of effective study and supporting students to overcome barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee the sixth‑form study area and supervise study conditions during lesson times, ensuring a calm and productive atmosphere.
  • Maintain adherence to policies, providing a supportive environment for effective study habits.
  • Maintain the register of compulsory “study students” referred by staff.
  • Track and assess students’ academic performance, giving regular feedback and progress reports to students, parents and staff.
  • Register and review attendance at timetabled supervised study sessions.
  • Communicate with parents regarding concerns and log all communications on the school MIS.
  • Provide study‑skills support, including personalised 1‑to‑1 or group mentoring sessions.
  • Identify students at risk of under‑achievement, poor attendance, low engagement or low self‑esteem and develop targeted intervention plans.
  • Help students develop study techniques, time‑management skills and draw up action plans with short‑ and long‑term targets.
  • Work closely with teachers, staff and external partners to provide comprehensive support and integrate academic support with classroom learning.
  • Develop strong, trusting relationships with students and act as a mentor and role model.
  • Maintain KS5 resources and manage the KS5 Learning Hub.
  • Support with timetabling changes, create appropriate form groups specific to tutor specialisms and track weekly attendance.
  • Assist the Careers Manager and Head of Sixth Form, for example with the UCAS process.
  • Support the school attendance officer and wider sixth‑form team when early intervention has not improved attendance.
Essential Criteria
  • Degree or equivalent qualification.
  • GCSE Maths and English Grade C or above (or equivalent).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience of working with young people, paid or voluntary.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • IT proficiency for record‑keeping and correspondence.
  • Tenacious and flexible, willing to try different approaches with students with varying needs.
  • Experience as a learning mentor, tutor or equivalent.
  • Experience working across a partnership of schools or within a Multi‑Academy Trust.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills, ability to build relationships and influence at all levels.
  • Proactive, positive, resilient and highly adaptable.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of working with students at risk of under‑achievement.
  • Experience coordinating study support and learning hubs.
  • Knowledge of KS5 curriculum and assessment requirements.
  • Ability to analyse data and produce clear, professional reports.
  • Experience with external partners such as Careers and UCAS processes.
