Responsibilities- Conduct machine performance and diagnostic tests, interpret results, and decide on repair scope.
- Use troubleshooting methods to diagnose and repair machine and attachment failures, following Time Requirement Guidelines (TRG).
- Escalate unresolved issues to Technical Communicators for further research and assistance.
- Adapt knowledge of Caterpillar machine systems to troubleshoot and repair new equipment models.
- Work in the field, shop, or at customer locations, including overtime and overnight assignments.
- Repair machines without error and consistently within the TRG.
- Address warranty and service letter issues efficiently and promptly.
- Use web‑based STW, SIS, and ET to address technical issues and perform all required tasks in accordance with procedures.
- Conduct business professionally, maintaining self‑control, integrity, and a professional image.
- Adhere to all customer requirements while on the job site.
- Order parts needed for repairs and evaluate them for reusability and failure causes.
- Complete service reports, time entry, and other paperwork on a laptop and submit daily via e‑mail.
- Communicate machine issues, resolution plans, and repair status to customers.
- Adhere to all customer care standards.
- Advocate safety at Western States and follow all applicable safety policies, procedures and standards.
- Serve as a training and team member in support of Western States’ strategic programs, projects, and initiatives.
- Promote the corporate vision, mission, and values.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to self‑schedule and perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge and use of Microsoft computer products or comparable systems.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, employees and the public.
- Knowledgeable in all Caterpillar machine systems.
- Ability to work overtime with minimal notice.
- Ability to drive long periods of time and travel away from home as required.
- Consistent attendance.
- Proof of high school diploma or GED.
- Associate’s degree or technical training from an accredited vocational school preferred.
- Five years of experience in diagnosis and repair of heavy equipment (scrapers, crawler tractors, loaders, excavators, off‑highway trucks; Caterpillar experience preferred).
- Prior experience in troubleshooting methods and systems required.
- Must own required tools.
- Must hold a current CDL with air‑brake experience and an acceptable driving record; must meet DOT requirements.
- Must be able to communicate in English (speak, read, comprehend, write).
- Must stand for long periods, walk, sit, climb stairs, reach, push, pull, lean, and twist.
- Must lift up to 50 lbs in accordance with Western States’ Lifting Safe Work Practice.
- Must meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies.
