Family Medicine Residency Director of Osteopathic Education

Responsibilities
  • Position Summary:

    The core faculty member for our Family Medicine Residency program will play a key role in educating and training future family medicine physicians.
  • The Director of Osteopathic Education has additional responsibilities to ensure that residents who desire and qualify for participation on the Osteopathic Recognition Track have an appropriate educational experience.
  • The successful candidate will have osteopathic expertise and strong clinical and teaching skills, and will collaborate with the program director, residents, and other faculty to provide a comprehensive educational experience for our residents. This position reports to the Program Director.
  • Provide patient care with evidence-based, cost-effective, high-quality care; participate in and lead quality improvement activities emphasizing reduction of health disparities; maintain licenses and board certifications; complete clinical charting in a timely fashion; coordinate and lead interprofessional, team-based care; contribute to community health improvements.
Educational Theory and Practice
  • Develop and implement Osteopathic Practices and Principles curriculum
  • Teach and train residents, medical students, and other learners in the theory, science, and identity of Family Medicine
  • Engage in lifelong learning and exhibit professionalism in teaching, clinical care, leadership, and advocacy
  • Deliver didactic lectures for the residency program and include information on health disparities
  • Serve as a mentor and advisor; participate in scholarly activity; deliver an engaging learning curriculum; develop competency-based curriculum including DEI objectives
  • Participate in faculty development; evaluate residents and medical students using competency-based, milestone evaluations and direct observation, with emphasis on Osteopathic Principles and Practice
  • Coordinate didactics and assigned rotations; supervise QA/QI and research activities as appropriate; engage in Osteopathic professional development
  • Attend didactics when not scheduled for patient care; provide at least 4 didactic sessions annually; seek feedback and use it to improve performance
  • Provide respectful, behavior-focused feedback and work with the faculty to develop remediation plans
Administrative
  • Administer and maintain an environment conducive to osteopathic education
  • Review and approve faculty and residents for Osteopathic Recognition Track
  • Serve on committees to enhance medical education, patient care, or quality improvement
  • Monitor resident work hours with attention to fatigue and sleep deprivation; participate in faculty, CCC, PEC, and GMEC meetings as directed
  • Engage in program evaluation and improvement plans and implement action items for programmatic success

Qualifications
  • DO or MD degree from an accredited medical school
  • Board certification in Family Medicine
  • Certification through the AOA or qualifications acceptable by the ACGME Osteopathic Recognition Committee
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted Maine medical license
  • Two years of experience as a practicing family physician; teaching experience preferred
  • Strong clinical skills in family medicine (outpatient and inpatient)
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to education and development of future family medicine physicians
  • Ability to collaborate with residents, faculty, staff, and patients; experience with electronic medical records and clinical technologies
