Lead Utility Protection and Control Technician
Eaton’s ES AMER ESS division is currently seeking a Lead Utility Protection and Control Technician. In this role, our technicians work remotely, travel up to 3 consecutive weeks at a time, support client commissioning activities, and travel primarily in the Northeast and northern Midwest. A company vehicle is provided for business and personal use.
The expected annual salary range for this role is $105,000 – $182,000. In addition to base salary, you are eligible for per diem and premium pay overtime.
What You’ll DoAs a Lead Utility Protection & Control Technician, you’ll oversee technical operations and documentation, including work plans, isolation plans, and functional test plans. This hands‑on role involves comprehensive testing and final checkout, ensuring the highest safety and reliability standards.
- Work around energized “in‑service” electrical equipment to test and commission reliability upgrades in brown‑field transmission stations.
- Develop isolation plans and procedures for removing existing equipment such as protective relays, relay panels, AC/DC panels, battery systems, breakers, transformers, SSVTs, CCVTs, PTs, CTs, and linear couplers.
- Communicate technical information to non‑technical personnel, educate customers, and present information to internal and external customers.
- Assist with all aspects of testing substation devices and equipment.
- Identify and resolve design errors.
- Directly witness or perform critical tests such as DC functional trip testing prior to energization and in‑service.
- Provide technical instructions, mentoring, and guidance to field personnel.
- Successfully complete and maintain compliance with Eaton’s safety qualification program and policy, including the EESS Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) program and any required annual recertifications.
- Submit to periodic customer‑required background and drug screenings.
- 7+ years utility substation relay testing experience OR a combination of 4+ years on‑the‑job experience and technical education/military experience.
- Must reside within the contiguous U.S. and possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
- Submit to initial and periodic customer‑required background and drug screenings.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or applicable military experience.
- Willingness to train and mentor technicians and other team members.
- 10+ years experience in utility substation electrical testing.
- Transmission substation relay test experience.
