Food Service Specialist - Cook/Baker

Job Summary:

This is a progressively responsible position for the School Dining Service Program.

Salary: $21.17 per hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for a high standard of nutrition for the school dining services program.
  • Prepare main meal and vegetables as listed on the menu in amounts needed, following all established sanitation procedures.
  • Assist in student/meal accountability as required.
  • Assist in supervision of children during breakfast service as required.
  • Assist manager in ordering food and supplies.
  • Prepare main entrée for the Breakfast Program.
  • Assist in preparation, serving and clean‑up of meals as assigned by immediate supervisor (Breakfast and Lunch).
  • Check increased main meal/vegetable recipes as provided by the kitchen manager. Assist supervisor in accountability of food and supplies used daily.
  • Ensure food items are properly stored/thawed as needed for meal preparation and report needed maintenance.
  • Work harmoniously with staff at the assigned school.
  • Assist in supervision of assigned kitchen personnel (Food Service Assistants & Substitutes). Check availability of supplies for the next day’s menu.
  • Assist in money accountability as assigned by immediate supervisor. Lift and store food and related products as required.
  • Perform all other job‑related duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

Education and/or Experience

High School graduate or GED equivalent. Certificate from State Nutrition Programs, Department of Educational & Cultural Services offered cook’s course. Specialized training in sanitation, food handling, safety.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with individuals and groups of employees.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Knowledge of basic mathematics.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to use a personal computer with database, spreadsheet and word‑processing software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
