Position

Purpose:

The Relief Manager position is responsible for overseeing meals in Commons, ensuring that departmental/college standards are maintained as outlined in the Dining Services Professional Guide, college handbook, sector specific expectations/policies, 2014 Food Code and Maine State / Federal liquor regulations.

Job Duties:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Direct and oversee all service and sanitation components during daily meal periods, acting as the primary managerial presence on the dining floor.
  • Manage shift dynamics, including completing position and break assignments, ensuring optimal staffing levels, and securing replacements to maintain seamless service flow.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), HACCP guidelines, and the Maine Food Code 2014 standards. Conduct regular quality assurance checks, including accurate temperature logging and injury reporting (within 24 hours).
  • Conduct Out Front quality assurance checks. Guarantee accuracy and professionalism in the presentation of food, including the correctness of all signage and menu cards and appropriate food labeling.
  • Conduct service and sanitation huddles and assist in the implementation of departmental procedures and staff training modules.
  • Maintain the highest level of proactive customer service. Serve as the first-level manager to address and resolve conflicts that arise on the floor.

  • Forge robust collaborative partnerships with colleagues across the entire Dining department and the broader university community.
  • Be a flexible, supportive team member, readily assisting in other operational areas and executing all assigned duties with professionalism.
  • Ensure adherence to sound environmental practices, including composting, recycling, and waste reduction.
  • Maintain a high level of safety awareness and ensure all injuries are reported within 24 hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field desired.
  • Serve Safe certification.

Experience

  • Minimum of six years’ food service experience.

Skills and Knowledge
