The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the HFD / MMHNCC for a Maintenance Worker. Job Overview The Maintenance Worker repairs and maintains the facility’s buildings and grounds. Responsibilities
- Maintains the fire alarm system, nurse call bell system, security systems, and Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system and emergency generator.
- Operates, maintains, and repairs the plumbing system including water softeners, heating system, bathroom fixtures, piping, and drains.
- Performs landscaping and maintenance tasks for facility grounds, including mowing, planting, watering, pruning, mulching, plowing, and weeding.
- Work assignments are delegated and reviewed by a supervisor/lead worker, performed independently with assistance as needed.

Physical and Environmental Demands This position requires daily strenuous physical effort, including repeated bending, stooping, standing, reaching, and lifting objects up to 100 pounds. Potential exposure to body fluids, chemicals, dust, dirt, and all weather conditions.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Behaviors)
- Knowledge of building and equipment repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of motorized equipment and hand/power tools used in grounds maintenance.
- General knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good people skills for professional relations.
- Ability to understand detailed instructions, manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
- Ability to perform basic troubleshooting of heating, ventilation, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, and refrigeration systems.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches.
- Power drain cleaners, circular saws, table saws, skill saws, Sawzall, cutting and soldering torches, orbital and belt sanders; drill press, pipe threaders, power hand drills, heat guns, bench grinders, air compressors, arc and acetylene welders, impact hammers, wire feed and stick welders.
- Yard tractor, power mowers, power rake, hedge trimmers.
- Multi-meters, polarity tester, G.F.I tester, voltmeter, amp meter, thermostat calibration kit, thermometers, pressure test gauges.
- Truck with snowplow and sander, tractor and front‑end loader, snow blowers, and computer.
- Boiler chemicals, contact cements, adhesives, paints, drain cleaners, cleaning chemicals, lubricants.
- Insulation, sheetrock, wood, metal, and PVC pipe.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Three years building repair and maintenance experience.
- Boiler license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

Additional InformationThis position may be eligible for a statutory $1.00 an hour base pay increase effective July 1, 2026.
