Position SummaryOperates and maintains water or wastewater plants, performing duties necessary to repair, replace, and maintain mechanical, electronic, control, and instrumentation equipment related to water and wastewater treatment facilities, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to ensure the effective operation of the facilities and distribution systems.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsUnder general supervision, performs full-level manual labor or mechanical duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodation so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
- Operates and monitors all processing equipment and machinery.
- Initiates changes in operation as determined through calculations and monitoring of processing variables, test procedures, and independent judgement of varying factors.
- Effects routine maintenance (repairs and cleaning) of all buildings/structures, equipment, fans, and blowers; including but not limited to conducting routine inspections, making mechanical repairs/adjustments and overhauling pumps, reduction heat, and variable speed drive units.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
- Maintains computerized operational control of lift stations.
- Collects samples and performs various laboratory tests and analysis required for effective operation of the wastewater treatment facility.
- Responds to and takes appropriate action in relation to hazardous chemical leaks (chlorine, sulfur dioxide), which require the use of an oxygen breathing apparatus.
High School diploma or GED.
ExperienceOne (1) year of experience in water treatment, electrical, mechanical, technical, general utility construction, or a related field. Preference will be given to applicants with water or wastewater treatment “trainee” experience or applicants already holding a Class C or B Water or wastewater Certificate of Competency.
Licenses and CertificationsMust obtain Class D Water or wastewater Certificate of Competency from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as applicable, within 6 months from date of hire. Must obtain Class C Water or wastewater Certificate of Competency from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as applicable, within 2 years from date of hire.
Conditions of EmploymentMust submit to and pass a criminal background, pre-employment drug test, pre-placement medical examination, and job placement assessment (JPA). Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License Class “C” and good driving record as defined by City policy. An applicant who does not possess a Texas Driver's License or proper class will be allowed ten (10) working days after a job offer is made to obtain proper licensing.

This position is subject to emergency operations. The individual holding this position will be required to work as usual or as needed: during emergency operations, in preparation for prolonged emergency operations and/or during recovery from prolonged emergency operations as directed by his/her direct supervisor, Department Head or designee, or the City Manager or designee.
