Senior Healthcare Accountant – Job Description Overview

The Senior Healthcare Accountant is responsible for overseeing complex accounting functions within a healthcare environment, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and adherence to GAAP and healthcare-specific accounting standards. This role partners closely with finance leadership and operational teams to support strategic and regulatory initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and healthcare reporting requirements
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Analyze financial results and provide variance analysis to leadership
  • Oversee revenue recognition, patient accounts, and third‑party reimbursement accounting
  • Assist with cost reporting, audits, and regulatory filings
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities

    Maintain internal controls and support SOX or internal audit requirements
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to junior accounting staff
  • Collaborate with operations, billing, and compliance teams to resolve accounting issues
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including healthcare industry experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and healthcare reimbursement models
  • Experience with healthcare accounting systems and ERP platforms
  • Advanced Excel skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in hospital systems, physician practices, or healthcare services organizations
  • Experience with Medicare/Medicaid cost reports
  • Prior experience supporting audits in a healthcare environment
