Senior Healthcare Accountant – Job Description Overview
The Senior Healthcare Accountant is responsible for overseeing complex accounting functions within a healthcare environment, ensuring accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and adherence to GAAP and healthcare-specific accounting standards. This role partners closely with finance leadership and operational teams to support strategic and regulatory initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, and healthcare reporting requirements
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations
- Analyze financial results and provide variance analysis to leadership
- Oversee revenue recognition, patient accounts, and third‑party reimbursement accounting
- Assist with cost reporting, audits, and regulatory filings
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities
Maintain internal controls and support SOX or internal audit requirements - Serve as a resource and mentor to junior accounting staff
- Collaborate with operations, billing, and compliance teams to resolve accounting issues
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- CPA preferred
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including healthcare industry experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and healthcare reimbursement models
- Experience with healthcare accounting systems and ERP platforms
- Advanced Excel skills
- Experience in hospital systems, physician practices, or healthcare services organizations
- Experience with Medicare/Medicaid cost reports
- Prior experience supporting audits in a healthcare environment
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and lead projects
