Historic Newspaper Project Assistant

Inside Higher Ed – Lexington, KY – Student Part‑Time (15 hours/week, Mon‑Fri 8‑4)

Salary $13.00/hour

Job Summary – This position is with the Special Collections Research Center located in the Margaret I. King Library Building. The student assistant will have a hands‑on role working with fragile archival materials and supporting the project through both physical preservation and digitization processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct inventory of historic newspapers
  • Carefully handle and prepare fragile newspapers for digitization and long‑term storage
  • Scan newspapers using appropriate equipment and techniques to preserve image quality and integrity
  • Organize, label, and store digital files according to established naming conventions and archival standards
  • Maintain accurate records of items inventoried, scanned, and stored
  • Use spreadsheets and other tools to track project progress and metadata
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled at the University of Kentucky
  • English language proficiency
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to handle fragile, rare, and special material objects with care and respect for the intrinsic value of archival materials
  • Experience with Photoshop and photography helpful but not required
  • Basic familiarity with spreadsheets helpful but not required
Physical Requirements

Ability to push and/or lift objects up to 30 pounds.

Shift

15 hours a week, Monday–Friday, 8‑4.
