National Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader

Join HDR’s power sector as the National Substation Physical Design Sub-Business Class Leader. This role reports to the Area Operations Leadership and the national Substation Business Class Lead, focusing on protection and control design within the substation delivery business class.

Expected compensation ranges from $142,240 to $203,200 depending on skills, experience, education and location.

Responsibilities
  • Drive development and implementation of a quality program to foster technical growth of junior engineers.
  • Lead a physical design training and career development program for the national business class.
  • Conduct quarterly training/meetings with EITs and junior engineers on project lessons, success, and overall issues.
  • Maintain technical practices, standards, and expectations to solve client problems and support commercial success.
  • Develop and apply technical tools, standards, and techniques to enhance service quality and efficiency.
  • Build a network of technical SMEs to drive national practice goals.
  • Communicate production needs and collaborate with the Business Class Lead on staffing and expertise levels.
  • Support professional development through best practices, technical policies, papers, credentialing, and recognition.
  • Lead proposal technical reviews (e.g., Blue Team Reviews) and participate in root‑cause analysis.
  • Participate in or lead PARRs (Project Approach Resource Review).
  • Achieve a 70‑75 % utilization goal by supporting projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active participation in internal and external technical working groups.
  • Subject‑matter expertise in physical/outdoor design concepts.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or a closely related field.
  • 10 years of experience and commitment to quality, improvement and HDR values.
  • Professional or engineering registration relevant to the role.
  • Experience managing diverse teams.
  • Collaborative working with area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.
  • Active participation in HDR’s employee‑owned culture.
Substation Design Skills
  • Constructability and design criteria.
  • Bus span calculations, AC/DC sizing and loading.
  • Raceway, cable design and grounding.
  • Lightning protection, substation lighting, and clearance checks.
  • Major equipment specification development.
  • Experience with CDEGS, WinIGS and related software.
