Job Summary

CIVILIAN DISPATCHER – The top step for this position is currently $68,198.36, PLUS an excellent benefits package. The position will receive a 5% COLA in July 2025 and a 3% COLA in July 2026, bringing the top step to $73,756.52.

The City of Baldwin Park offers an excellent benefits package with monthly health benefits contributions, bilingual pay, training pay, certificate pay, longevity pay, education pay, tuition reimbursement, and much more! Civilian Dispatchers are required to work holidays and weekends, as well as evenings, nights, and early‑morning shifts. Dispatchers will work 12.5‑hour shifts plus one 10‑hour payback schedule once a month. Shift rotation occurs every three (3) months (day shift to night shift or vice versa), based on seniority.

Position

Under general supervision from the Civilian Dispatch Supervisor, the Civilian Dispatcher will receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone and voice radio messages and dispatch required law‑enforcement personnel and equipment.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities
  • Receive incoming emergency and police business telephone and voice radio calls
  • Compile data and maintain records of emergencies, equipment, and personnel dispatched
  • Send and receive information using a computer data terminal; keep radio contact with units on assignment
  • Type a variety of information related to law‑enforcement activities as permitted
  • Perform clerical tasks such as filing, record‑keeping, typing, computer entry, and data compilation
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • May be requested to attend training courses during employment
  • Working knowledge of modern practices and techniques of law‑enforcement, patrol, investigation, public relations, and report writing
  • Knowledge of vehicle and penal codes, laws of arrest, rules of evidence, and court procedures
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations
  • Ability to make accurate and factual observations, draw logical conclusions, and make proper recommendations
  • Deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions
Minimum Qualifications Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
  • One year of experience involving public contact, preferably requiring radio communications equipment
  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Typing proficiency at 35 net WPM
  • Possession of a POST Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate highly desirable
Typing Certificate Requirements (Must be submitted with application)

Typing certificates must be a 5‑minute timed test noting a net typing speed of 35 WPM or more. The certificate must be dated within one (1) year of the application date and issued by an accredited entity. Online typing tests will not be accepted. The certificate must contain:

  • Name of the entity that administered the test
  • Name of applicant
  • Number of corrected (net) words per minute typed during a 5‑minute test
  • Date of certificate – cannot be more than one year from application submission
  • Signature and title of person verifying the typing test
  • Address and telephone number of the entity administering the exam
Selection Process

Applicants will be screened and those whose qualifications best meet or exceed the requirements will be invited to participate in the selection process. Applicants must submit complete application materials online. Copies of required certifications must be submitted with the application. Stating “see resume” is not acceptable.

The selection process may include a written examination, a panel interview, and other testing processes.
