Required License/Registration/Certification: KY Veterinary License required. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) category II accreditation within 180 days of hire.
Physical Requirements:
- Walk, stand, and navigate on varied terrain and surfaces, including in and around animal housing environments.
- Climb stairs and ladders as needed and move between multiple building levels, which may lack elevator access.
- Bend, kneel, reach, and stretch to access equipment, enclosures, or storage areas.
- Carry or lift materials or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Tolerate exposure to typical animal facility conditions, including animal dander, noise, odors, and temperature fluctuations.

Shift: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm with additional hours as work load demands.
Job SummaryThe Attending Veterinarian Associate plays a critical role in ensuring the health and welfare of research animals across the institution. This position provides expert veterinary oversight and ensures clinical care in accordance with federal regulations, institutional policies, and accepted veterinary standards. The Attending Veterinarian Associate supports the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and participates in the development and implementation of animal care protocols and procedures, contributing to the ethical and humane treatment of animals used in research.
In this capacity, the Attending Veterinarian Associate performs comprehensive assessments of animal health and facility operations, identifies areas for improvement, and collaborates with researchers, veterinary technicians, and animal care staff to ensure compliance with all applicable standards. The role requires on-site evaluations, consultation on study design as it relates to animal welfare, and direct engagement in resolving complex health or protocol-related issues.
The Attending Veterinarian Associate also assists in training and mentoring staff and research personnel on best practices in animal care and use.
Additionally, the Attending Veterinarian Associate acts as a liaison between the research community and the veterinary staff, ensuring that animal care aligns with both scientific goals and ethical responsibilities. The role also involves frequent travel to animal housing facilities, both within the Lexington area and at other sites throughout the state. The Attending Veterinarian Associate must demonstrate strong clinical judgment, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to advancing the institution’s mission through responsible and humane animal research.
